International Day of Rural Women October 15

International Day of Rural Women October 15

Rural women depend mostly on natural resources and agriculture for their livelihoods, accounting for a quarter of the world's population as a whole.

In developing countries, rural women make up about 43 percent of the agricultural workforce and produce, process and prepare much of the food available, placing the heavy responsibility for food security on them.

Given that 76 percent of the population living in extreme poverty is in rural areas, guaranteeing rural women's access to productive agricultural resources empowers women and contributes to reducing hunger and poverty in the world .
