Not that the government is ignorant of the impact the project could make, but it says it has no choice but to harness existing means to control the growing energy crisis in Kerala, which is partly dependent on the private electricity sector.

Things are no different in other states, either. Although Kerala has reached almost 100 percent electricity coverage, many parts of India still remain in the dark. For a large part of the population of India, electricity to this day remains a distant dream.

However, there are two brothers who want to make India's energy crisis a thing of the past. The duo have developed a new solution that they say won't even slightly affect the ecological balance.

Avant Garde Innovations, founded by brothers Arun and Anoop George from Kerala, has launched a low-cost wind turbine that can generate enough electricity to power an entire home for a lifetime. The appliance is only the size of a ceiling fan. This wind turbine can produce 5 kWh / kW per day - at a one-time cost of US $ 750.

Our goal is to eliminate energy poverty, reduce dependence on powerful state electrical grids, and create energy self-sufficiency for all in need through affordable, localized, and distributed renewable energy. By doing so, we believe that we can collectively make our world a cleaner environment, achieve new economic prosperity and social change, ”says one of the sections on the company's website.

"Our first offering is a very affordable small wind turbine for residential, commercial, agricultural, village electrification and other uses, which was launched on the market in 2016."

Avant Garde, which entered the market in 2015, claims to be a startup with a "green" heart and soul.

For start-up, the opportunity is huge. India is the sixth largest energy consumer in the world, accounting for 3.4 percent of global energy consumption. The federal governments in India, and the Central Government are currently unable to bear the enormous cost of the infrastructure required to bring electricity to remote villages.

Erecting power poles and power lines require large investments that could cost millions of dollars.

This is where Avant Garde Innovations comes into the picture. “Currently a small wind turbine generating 1 kW of power costs INR 3-7 lakh (US $ 4,000 - 10,000), however our company plans to sell it for less than NR 50,000 (about US $ 750). Costs will be further reduced through mass production, ”Arun said in an interview with The Times of India.

The company launched its pilot project at a Church in the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram in January this year. The small prototype wind turbine they have developed is highly scalable with power capacities of 300 kW or even more, Arun told the e27 website.

"Our passionate goal is to introduce innovative, affordable and sustainable solutions that take renewable energy self-sufficiency and energy empowerment to the next level through a distributed and decentralized approach using pioneering strategies that the world has yet to witness," says the company.

This revolutionary product has also earned a spot in the Top 20 Cleantech Innovations in India. The company has also made it to the list of top 10 clean energy companies in India for the 'Sustainable Energy For All' initiative under the board of a billion dollar clean energy investment opportunity.

According to the World Wind Energy Council, the country ranks fourth in terms of global installed wind power capacity, after China, the United States and Germany.

Perhaps, if Avant Garde Innovations takes off more than is believed, Kerala could keep its Athirappilly Falls intact.
