Electricity, renewable and the ‘e-mobility’ industry create the Electrification Alliance in Europe

Thus, last week the Electrification Alliance was born. The union of European electrical employers (Eurelectric), with Unesa as Spanish representative; Solarpower Europe, with UNEF; WindEurope, with PREPA; the European Copper Institute, the European Association of the heat pump, and the European Association for battery electric vehicles, hybrids and fuel cell (AVERE), with the Spanish Aedive; signed this agreement by which they intend to electrify the European economy and make it a leader in the fight against climate change.

The interests of one and the other have so far been separated, but in the end, the European electricity sector has joined hands to counteract the historic power of fossil fuels, from coal to oil and natural gas.

This group of organizations recognizes that electricity has already been adopted as the main energy supplier in key sectors of the economy and they are convinced that electricity in Europe must be decarbonized in 2050; as well as that they trust that electricity will continue to reveal its true value in the coming years, as it becomes the key vector to achieve a decarbonized, energy efficient and digital economy.

Therefore, they have agreed on the following points:

1. We are fully committed to demonstrating the significant potential of electricity in its decarbonization. We will continue to support the reduction of carbon intensity and the expansion of investment in non-emitting technologies such as renewable energy, energy storage and smart grids towards a decarbonised electricity mix. We have the objective of maximizing the potential of decarbonized electricity and giving way to technologies, competitiveness, economic growth, job creation and the promotion of a healthy society.

2. We will promote sectoral integration and the important role that electrical technologies will play in the decarbonization of other sectors of the economy, such as transportation and heating and cooling in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors. The electricity value proposition will be expanded as these sectors will benefit from upcoming investments to further decarbonise electricity generation. Extending the value of such investments will help to optimize and stabilize the entire European energy system and avoid investment blockage.

3. We support the development and deployment of electromobility and associated infrastructure. We believe that electromobility provides essential reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, air and noise pollution with high benefits for the health of European citizens. The use of electric vehicle batteries as flexible demand and energy storage will allow greater renewable penetration and increase the reliability of the electricity supply.

4. We support the development and deployment of smart and efficient heating and cooling technologies that provide environmental benefits, help improve system efficiency, flexibility and stability, provide storage solutions, and enable direct response to demand measures.

5. We support the evolution towards a more flexible energy system that will depend on smarter and better connected systems through networks, improved storage solutions and a more flexible demand.

6. We believe that consumers can play - individually and collectively - a greater role in the energy transition through different sectors (energy, mobility, heating and cooling) and therefore support greater transparency in the market.

Accordingly, “we call on European and national policy makers and stakeholders to:

- Recognize and support the crucial role that decarbonised electricity and efficient electricity technologies will play in achieving Europe's climate and energy goals and its commitments under the Paris Agreement.

- Recognize that decarbonised electricity becomes a key vehicle for a sustainable European economy;

- Improving the methodology for calculating the primary energy factor is essential, and continuing to deploy the recharging infrastructure necessary for a rapid deployment of electromobility solutions, as well as CO2 emission standards for all types of vehicles.

- “Promote zero emission vehicles” and “remove obstacles to electrification and actively support incentives and initiatives that accelerate the process of decarbonizing electricity at competitive prices for European consumers.

- They also want the deployment of smart grid technologies to be enabled, related to the automation of measurement networks, advanced data management and response to demand.

In short, all the European agents who have the decarbonisation of electricity in their hands have come together to lobby in Brussels and move forward in this process. Seeing is believing.
