Lithium ion remains the number one choice for rechargeable batteries that power the handheld devices, the laptops in our bags, and the electric vehicles we drive. But we need a new battery technology that is safer and offers a much higher energy density. Fisker Automotive Company may have the answer.
Fisker is known for creating the Fisker Karma electric luxury sports sedan in 2012 and now the EMotion. As Green Car Congress reports, Fisker this week filed a patent for a new solid-state battery. If it meets expectations, this battery will provide electric vehicles with a range of more than 800 kilometers (500 miles) on a single charge. On top of that, recharging will only take a minute.
That impressive combination of range and charge time is thanks to Fisker's use of three-dimensional electrodes. It allows the solid state battery to contain 2.5 times the energy density of the equivalent lithium-ion battery.
Fisker has apparently already overcome some limitations of current solid-state battery technology, including cold temperature operation and charging time. Low-cost and scalable manufacturing is promised, but Fisker also points to the flexibility of its new technology, which would allow it to adjust it to work with existing tools, which in turn reduces costs and speeds production.
However, we shouldn't expect to see Fisker's drums anytime soon. The patent is on file and Fisker is now speaking with automotive and non-automotive associations. Solid-state battery commercial application isn't expected until 2023. Still, a one-minute recharge for about five years seems like pretty good news.
